When your PC crashes, it’s generally because of problems with the Windows registry. This file, or set of files, is an important part of the Windows operating system. The registry keeps track of everything to do with your computer from the relationships between peripherals to the details about the software you have. If something happens to the registry, it will cause major problems with your computer.
There are many different software programs available that can fix your registry. However, ParetoLogic, Inc. offers an all-in-one piece of software called RegCure that they claim will scan, repair and optimize your PC registry on your Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 98 or ME operating systems.
Product Overview
RegCure offers backup and restore capability, shortcut fixes, removal of DLL entries and empty registry keys. RegCure also offers users the ability to customize the type of scans they want to do. For instance, if you have certain items on your hard drive that you don’t want to have scanned, you can set RegCure up so that it skips those files during a scan. This product will also allow you to manage your startup items, which ParetoLogic claims will improve the startup speed of your PC. One final component of the RegCure software package is the automatic or manual repair capability. This function allows you to set up a scheduler for automatic repairs or gives you the option to scan and repair whenever you choose.
Review
In order to test RegCure, I used a PC running Windows XP (SP3) with 256 MB of RAM. Obviously, this computer isn’t the latest and greatest and more importantly nothing had been done to this PC to optimize or “fix” it over the last year or so. In short, it was a good candidate for RegCure.
Installation
The installation process for RegCure from the download on the site went well. The download is fast and the install went flawlessly. On a positive note, ParetoLogic makes it easy to download RegCure from their Web site. Links for a “Free Scan” are posted throughout the entire site. This link takes you to a direct download of the RegCure demo software.
Running the Scan
RegCure makes the process of scanning your PC very easy. The interface is clean and easy to use. The scanning process involves selecting which scans that you want to perform. Once you’ve made your choices, you click “Start Scan” and let RegCure do the rest. One note: Back your PC up before you use RegCure. This is just a good practice and you should do it on a regular basis. Fortunately, RegCure’s backup area works really well for this. The scan found 11 registry errors and reported that it had fixed them. There was even a log file that allowed me to see which registries were affected.
Customization
As advertised, RegCure really does give you a high level of customization. The choices on what you want to scan, being able to adjust the settings, the ignore list and scheduling are all huge pluses.

Final Results
RegCure gives you your money’s worth. After scanning and doing repairs, the old slow PC that I used showed measurable improvements in speed. I even went ahead and optimized my startup files with RegCure and noticed that my boot up speed was quite a bit faster. It’s not quite like having a new computer, but it was nice to be able to take an old machine and do something that made it work better. There is a reason why RegCure is CNET’s winner of “Best Registry Cleaner” from 2003 through 2009. It’s a product that works well and is easy to use.
